Salty Books Publishing exists to give authors ultimate control
Yep, it's that simple.
Our founder, Michael David MacBride, had published in a variety of formats and with a variety of publishers (big, small, university presses, etc). When it came time to publish his novels, he decided he wanted full ownership over the process. He felt connected to the art he created, the title he developed, and wanted to release the book the way he had envisioned it without compromising that vision.
When he looked for alternative methods of publishing his books, he was constantly frustrated by the various hybrid publishers that oversold services he didn't need or didn't provide basic support services he did--or they nickeled and dimed each of the services Michael wanted. So, he created his own thing.
In the process, Michael found other authors who commiserated about the very same things. They knew they could "do it themselves"; however, many of them felt the process of KDP or Ingram was still a bit daunting. While they wanted their book released their way, they lacked the desire to dig into the logistics of making it happen. Since Michael loves puzzles and was familiar with the process, he happily took it on, and so Salty Books was born.
The simple mantra for Salty Books is: delivering on the vision the author has for their book.
What do we publish?
Frankly, anything that's interesting and engaging.
Here's the thing, our founder is a deeply curious person. He loves a little of everything, and jumps at the opportunity to learn something new and finds new challenges exciting. That said, he's generally drawn to the types of books he likes to read. Good news, he likes to read a lot and across genres.
What's hybrid publishing?
It's somewhere on the spectrum between self-publishing and the "traditional" publishing model.
Think of it this way, self-publishing means that the author bears the burden of doing everything (writing, editing, cover design, promotion, registering ISBNs, etc).
The "traditional" model is the far opposite extreme, with the author being responsible for "just" writing the book.
This is changing, as the model evolves and the author is expected to do more and more, but hang with me.
If you ask a handful of hybrid publishers, you'll get a handful of different answers.
Here's the quick and dirty about what it means for Salty Books:
Salty Books works as a collaborative partner with the author, to deliver on their vision
The author retains full rights and royalties for any/all of their books
Salty Books operates as a "general contractor" of sorts, to bring the author's book to print
The author chooses the services they want from Salty Books and only pays for those services they require
Salty Books continues be a supportive, collaborative partner for our authors
Check our our services for more detailed information, but that's the gist of it.
Why do we do what we do?
In short, because we love it.
There's that old adage about if you love what you do, then you never work a day of your life. We're not entirely sure that's true, but it certainly takes the sting out of the tedious aspects of any task. We love building relationships with creative people, we love helping people put books into the world, and we love having a new book to read.
Does my book need a nautical theme?
Nah. We just love the oceans and its creatures.
In truth, our interests are varied and diverse. Try us. We're likely game.
Can you help me with my book?
Probably.
